Snowball fight and more

Finally, the newsroom was slow enough for me to search for some interesting photos of my own this afternoon. Here are some of the photos I took at the "Winter Fun Fest" at the mall area in front of Moody. I don't particularly like CYA overall shots although it is always good to have some when you cover assignments. I like photos of particular individual or group of individuals who interact with each other because these kind of photos always have a better focal point that attracts the viewers' eyes.

The last two cents for the semester.

slow motion video of a bee

Found this just outside our department building. I shoot it with a high speed camera. It is 210 fps. No sound though.

This week's posting: In mid-air

In mid-air

A dominant visible object in your photo needs to be flying in the mid-air moving with a certain speed. In this particular case, let's not consider the moon, sun and stars. Due next Wed. before class.

Judson Candy Factory

This has to be my most favorite photograph I have taken yet in my career as a photographer. The whole essence of the reflection on the pavement is the best! I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do =]

reflection

I'll try for a better photo later, but I was feeling a bit philosophical and introspective while riding the bus to pick up my kids earlier tonight.  This is a self portrait, taken with my camera phone, of my reflection looking at highway traffic zooming by my bus window.

Panning exercise

I picked up this panning photo at last Friday's meeting. The lighting was not enough to freeze the action. Using flash would greatly affect the candid moment especially when shooting kids.

The photo was not very sharp but it emphasized the subject more because of the panning effect. Thanks to Jennifer's daughter as a volunteering server for the cake.

Reflection of life

This week's posting: Reflection of life

A little abstract won't hurt you in life. Learn to look at the world at a different perspective. And actually, it is not all abstract all the time. It can also be used in documentary, journalistic photography.
Happy searching.

first amendment discussion

I was discussing photojournalist and journalist rights in light of Occupy Wall Street, San Francisco, Philadelphia, etc. My photography friend Angela mentioned this link: photojournalist arrested.

A photographer covering an occupy demonstration in Milwaukee is arrested while taking photos of a protestor being detained. In the WISN TV story that follows the video, it states,

"Wednesday's arrest comes a little more than a month after officers arrested a photojournalist from WITI-TV at a fire scene.
The photojournalist was being told to move back from the scene of a fire despite members of the public standing closer to the scene than he was. When he questioned police about his placement, he was taken into custody."

Let's discuss. Does anyone see anything wrong with this? What separates photojournalists from citizen journalists? Does a press badge grant freedom? We are learning about laws and where photos are allowed. Was this photographer wrong for photographing the action on a public street?

It worries me to see police detaining someone covering news-- citizen or reporter--because information must reach the public. What reasons do you think they have to silence the media?

people taking pictures

There was a lot of picture taking during Treat Street Satuday at La Villita. We had fun eating candy, getting our faces painted and eating a lot of junk food.  I noticed most of the photo takers had point and shoot cameras, so all is not lost for those business owners, lol. The younger attendants took photos with cell phones No one else had an SLR, or at least not that I saw throughout the day.

Tips for quiz in law of photojournalism

The following are possible questions in law of photojournalism (find answers in the chapter and read the notes you took in class). The quiz will be in the form of multiple choices.

Which of the following location requires permission before photo taking?

Photojournalists has the right to take photos in public areas is base on what legal document?

What situation requires the approval of both the administrator and the recognizable people in the photo before photo taking?

Who can give you a legal right to enter an aftermath of a fire scene of a privately owned house?

In what situation requires you bylaw to turn over your camera equipment?

What was the latest final ruling from the court on photographer Ron Galella from taking picture of Kennedy Onassis?

What are the common situations when photos published becomes libel?

What is “improper photography law”? In what situation would someone consider breaking the law?

In discussing people’s privacy right. Kobre’s book mentioned Ms. Graham appeared in a county fair and had her photo being taken at a public place and published. She sued the newspaper and won. What was the case about?

“Work-for-hire” agreement means the copyright of a photo is own by who? And how do you define “work-for-hire”?

Precisely when is the earliest moment a photo is copyrighted and what do you need to do to claim copyright to your photo?

Some restrictions apply to photojournalists in taking photos of the person in their home even though without going into a person’s property. What are they?

When taking photos of an accident scene, what kind of legal concerns you need to be aware?

What is media “ride along” with the police? Is it legal? How did Supreme Court rule this kind of situation?

Are all true and real photos safe to print? In what situation a photo becomes “putting someone in a false light” and “embarrassing the subject” being photographed?
